Information
The name of the church is due to a Byzantine icon preserved here until sec. XVIII (today in the canonical house of the parish of Castelnuovo). Mary is depicted seated on a throne surrounded by clouds; on her right shoulder a comet star shines. The symbology is clear: the star indicates the virginity of the Madonna preserved intact before and after the birth of the divine Son.
The small country church is very simple: on the white plastered facade you can see a central rose window on the left side leaning a lower building on which stands a pretty bell tower. The interior has a single nave and houses the statue of Our Lady. The Church is frequented especially on the occasion of the Feast of Mary SS. of the Star, considered protector of fields and crops. This festival, which falls every second Sunday of May, seems to be inspired by an older and distant celebration in the East dedicated to the "Lady of Ears".
