The beautiful and imposing church was built in the sixteenth century at the behest of Pope Pius V, with the aim of countering the spread of Protestantism in the area. In fact, in the second half of the sixteenth century, a small Waldensian community had settled in Faeto, of French origin, perhaps attracted by the Franco Provencal language spoken in the small Apulian village.
The building, built with material from the no longer existing castle and Benedictine monastery of SS. Salvatore has a majestic grey stone facade, composed according to the dictates of the Renaissance style with double Ionic and Corinthian order, rebuilt in 1883. The interior is a basilica with three naves and a partial reconstruction made in the mid-nineteenth century; the right nave ends with the Chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Ears and the left with the Chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, where there is the niche that preserves the relics of San Prospero. The dome that precedes the apse is embellished by the Four Evangelists painted by Leonardo Scarinzi; while along the naves there are niches that house various statues, such as that of San Leonardo and that of Sant'Antonio. Near the high altar it is possible to admire the beautiful statues of the Madonna della Spiga , of the Holy Saviour and of Saint Prospero Martyr, patron saint of the village.
