Information
The building was built in the eighteenth century and initially was the seat of the judicial body of Aragonese origin (born in the fifteenth century) called Royal Provincial Audience, which had civil jurisdiction, criminal and administrative control over the entire Province of Capitanata and the County of Molise. For the construction of the building were widely used building materials from the Swabian Angevin Fortress, now reduced to an open-air quarry. The Palace of Justice, built in 1795 to the design of the engineer Francesco Viti, soon became the seat of the Court and the Tribunal of the District of Lucera and until 1923 of the Court of Assizes.
The building closes, in a raised position, a beautiful square that is characterized by the green present. The main façade consists of three levels united by the principle of symmetry and presents on the ground floor a large stone portal and, always in a central position, beyond the cornice a tower with clock.
The court of Lucera administered justice uninterruptedly until 1923, when by royal decree signed by the then President of the Council Benito Mussolini the seat of the court was moved from Lucera to Foggia. In 1938, however, the Lucera Court was restored, although with reduced jurisdiction. A reform of the judicial geography of 2015, despite being one of the most efficient courts in the Republic, determines the abolition. Today the building is in disuse.
