It was Marquis Pignatelli who called the Friars Minor to San Marco la Catola, asking them to incorporate the church into the convent, so that it would be "officiated and maintained with decorum".
The current structure of the building, however, is due to the successive enlargements made in 1650 and in the 1700s, and is characterized by a linear and symmetrical façade at the center of which is the church. The Monastery, which houses 40 cells, took the name of Santa Maria di Giosafat because it incorporates the ancient chapel of the same name inside which is preserved an admirable wooden bas-relief of Byzantine style, which portrays the Madonna di Giosafat, whose presence would prove, according to some, that the country was founded by veterans of the sixth crusade (the Frederick) in the first half of the thirteenth century.
The interesting and ancient library of the convent is also worth a visit.
In 1904 a young student of theology from Pietrelcina stayed for a short time at the convent: Saint Pius.
